Natural Gas, though regarded as the cleanest form of gas chemically, has a majority portion of Methane in it. It can be termed as safe only when used with proper care and regulations. On Combustion, it emits least CO 2 as compared to other fossil fuels.

Any gas, to be specific natural gas containing a noteworthy ( >1%) amount of Hydrogen Sulphide (H 2 S) gas is designated as sour gas. It has a strong pungent smell like rotten eggs.
Alberta’s natural Gas produce has a significant amount of sour gas in it. The West Canada successfully extracts sulphur from the maximum sour gas it produces. The sulphur so produced is elemental. It is used in the pharmaceutical industry and also in the manufacture of Paper, fertilizer, and steel. Canada has been known to safely handle it’s sour gas reserves and is one of the top producers of sulphur in the world.
Sour gas has high levels of H 2 S which is poisonous to fauna. More is the concentration level of H 2 S, more is the toxicity. A concentration greater than 75ppm is deadly. Concentration less than or equal to 20ppm affects the sense of sight and nasal passage. Higher levels of the gas cause extreme dizziness and major respiratory fatalities in the person.
Natural gas forms an integral part of the economy and hence it is of utmost importance that their production is carried out as safely as possible. As per the advice of several experts, it is recommended that the tanks of propane gas and natural gas should be located outside the building. These tanks should be adequately located in accordance with the importance of the building or important areas. It is also important to take care of the fact that no easily inflammable materials are kept close to these tanks. Also, these tanks should not be located too near to the roads or the normal pathway of the building.
Conversion of appliances utilizing natural gas to propane is a simple procedure, but it is recommended that they are carried out by trained people. Most of the appliances nowadays are eligible for this conversion and it is one of the most important criteria which choosing an appliance.After making sure that the conversion is possible in the appliance, remove the hose from which the source of the natural gas is connected and then shut off the hose. After removing the old hose, join a new hose which needs to be connected to the propane gas source. Make sure that all the connection are proper and tight.
